I know you may be thinking, "That's a lot of chemicals. Why is the list so long?" I understand the desire to keep the list as short as possible, but let me tell you a little about how it works. For some reason, my body does not like certain substances. You see, in the body, a chemical called GABA is important for many things. One of these things is sleep. GABA is released by the brain when it is stimulated. When we are anxious, we are more likely to be depressed. This is because the brain is in a "high alert" state and this causes a decrease in GABA. Here is an example: The brain of a person who was anxious is more likely to release GABA in response to the anxiety. This release can be beneficial, however, it can cause an "accumulation" of stress hormones. We all know that cortisol increases as we get more stressed out.
